With the Velella Project, Kampachi Farms and its partners are taking the lead in the development of technologies to support true open-ocean mariculture.

The Hawaii-based mariculture company Kampachi Farms has created floating fish farms, or “Aquapods,”which allow for the raising of fish without harming the environment in the process.

Part of the firm’s Velella Project, the floating fish farms are 22-feet unanchored cages that float in the eddies behind the Big Island of Hawaii and are tethered to a manned sea vessel. Marine biologists on the ship monitor the fish, which are fed a sustainable diet, consisting of more soy oil, soy meal and other sustainable proteins than the fish oil and fishmeal that is usually used. Because they reduce interactions with the rest of the marine environment, the Aquapods offer a sustainable way to raise fish while reducing environmental impact.

Floating fish farms offer a more sustainable way to produce seafood, with virtually no negative environmental effects.
